NEWMARKET G.A.A

In 1927 Newmarket reached their first County Junior football final to be beaten narrowly by Urhan. Amazingly the final was played in Killarney. The game was played on November 28th. The captain that day was Paddy Shea. A Newmarket team again hit the county highlights in the years 1934 and again in 1935 but this time in hurling, they were unlucky on both occasions. In 1950 the Newmarket football team once again got to the County final. The opposition this time was old rivals Canovee. The game was played in the U.C.C grounds, Cork. It was a draw; in the replay Canovee were deserving winners. In 1970 finally Newmarket got what they deserved with their first ever Cork County Junior football Final, after defeating Ardigole in a very tight contest in Macroom. Newmarket picked up their second county final win they defeated Killavullen in a very tight match, the match was played in Charleville on December 6th 1998.   Newmarket has had success in the Intermediate section winning the Intermediate league defeating Newcestown in Ballydesmond in 2000.

County Final

A day that will go down in history in Newmarket was December 6th 1998. The day Newmarket won the Junior Football County Final. The only other time this happened was in 1970 when Newmarket beat Urhan in Macroom in the County Final. Newmarket beat Brian Dillons after a reply in the semi-final by 1-9 to 0-6 points. This game was played before a huge crowd in Kilmurray. They went on to meet Killavullen in the final. This game was played in Charleville. Hundreds travelled from Newmarket dressed in the red and black and all carrying Newmarket flags. It was a very exciting game with just one point between them at the finish. Newmarket 0-9 Killavullen 0-8.

The team was:
James Morgan, Micheal O’ Keeffe, Dan Murphy, David Allen, John Fitzpatrick, Brian Daly, Maurice Hourigan, Mick Cottrell, Denis O’ Brien, John Cronin, John Paul O’ Neill, Tony O’ Keeffe, Danny Culloty, Mark O’ Sullivan and Seanie Francis O’ Conner.
Subs:
John Dugdale, Jerry McCarthy and John Sheehan.

Fund Raising For The Juvenile G.A.A

At this moment in time, May 2001, Newmarket Juvenile G.A.A are fund raising with the tremendous help and support of the parish. Money is being raised at an extraordinary pace and we're very grateful to everyone. Our Juvenile pitch, located at the West End of Newmarket, is being reseeded and drained by Sean Kelly.  For the fund raising, many day time and night time events are arranged.  Currently, we're organizing a fun walk and hoping to raise substantial amounts of money to aid our developments.  The official launch of all these events will take place at Hourigan's High Street. There will also be a night out in the Highland with a live band.  A model of the new dressing rooms will be on show that night. There are many more upcoming events, which have not been fully decided upon.

The under 21’s are very successful. They won the title in three Consecutive times. The under 21’s are going for there well earned fourth title this Sunday 29/4/01 in Knocknagree against Ballydesmond this will be a great achievement for Newmarket. This will be a giant record to win the title four times in a row.  Initially, they beat Boherbue by a one single point, and then conquered Kanturk and after that we played Ballydesmond and we won by comfortable three points, this year we hope we will dominate Ballydesmond.

P.S. We won by two points.

The Newmarket Festival was held in the grounds as well as a school sports day when we raised money for the club. The local E.S.B laid the poles for the nets and this prevents the football and sliotar from going too far. The juvenile G.A.A. Club spent many an hour training the boys. The pitch is now known as the juvenile G.A.A. pitch. The club chairman is Dan o’ Rairdan, P.R.O. is Mary Stack, the secretary is Catherine Culloty and the treasurer is Marian Murphy.
