The swimming bus was first organised by Newmarket Youth Club in Sept. '79.  My mother, Mary Stack, was secretary of the club at the time and it was decided that she would take charge of this venture.  At that time, three quarters of the bus were adults and as the years passed on, it was decided to have the service for children only.

The youth club closed  in 1986 and my mother continued to run the service on her own.  She had great help however from many young people down through the years and in later years from the children's parents.

It has given hundreds of children the opportunity of learning to swim - an opportunity they may not have had otherwise.  It has been a most worthwhile service and Mary is delighted that the service has been continued after her retirement in June 2000.

Swim week

Every summer, at the beginning of July and late August, we have a swim week. The skills we learn are floating, backstroke, treading water, butterfly, breaststroke, diving and different levels in safety.  We learn how to rescue someone if they are in trouble in the water. At the end of the swim week we have a gala.  We participate in races to win prizes.  When we’ve completed the swim week we get refreshments for taking part. They then present certificates to everyone and award prizes to the winners.  When the swimmers have completed the courses they are qualified swimmers.
